South Dakota was the 40th state in the USA; it became a state on November 2, 1889. The State Capital is Pierre. South Dakota is the 17th biggest state and the 45th most populous state in the USA.
The sights to see while in South Dakota are Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial near Rapid City, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and Black Hills National Forest. The Corn Palace in Mitchell and Wall Drug in Wall are other attractions in South Dakota but not worth visiting if you have to travel out of your way to see them.
Badlands National Park. It is located just outside of Rapid City and near the Wall I-90 exit. It was once a wooded forest where dinosaurs roamed but prairie winds and centuries of rain have formed deep gorges and vivid red bands standing out against the buff tones of the buttes. These subtle colors and contrasting shadows of the landscape is an overwhelming sight.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial. It was completed in 1941 and one of the most inspiring symbols of democracy. It features colossal granite faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. Stroll the Avenus of Flags and arrive at the Grand View Terrace. If you have time walk the trail leading up the base.
Crazy Horse Memorial. The carving is in progress and will be the world’s largest sculpture (563' high, 641' long, carved in the round). The nine-story-high face of the legendary Lakota leader, Crazy Horse, gazes over the Black Hills.
Custer State Park. It is in the Black Hills with spectacular terrain and an abundance of wildlife. Grazing bison is a not uncommon to see along the roadside. The park also boasts scenic drives such as Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway.
Black Hills National Forest. The forest offers hiking, camping, and many scenic byways to take in the sight of nature, wildlife, and lots of great views.
Corn Palace. This building is located in Mitchell. It's a unique building decorated with picturial murals made entriely of colored corn.
Wall Drug. A world famous main street dedicated to western style shops and attractions.
